FCT Permanent Secretary, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, has given assurances that the FCT Administration will support activities aimed at developing sports in the FCT.
Sir Ohaa said this when the FCT Forum of Sports Associations’ Chairmen (FOFSAC) paid him a courtesy visit in his office led by its Interim Chairman, Chief Edem Selong, of the FCT Squash Association.
While responding to the Association’s request for the FCT Department of Sports to be upgraded to a Commission, Sir Ohaa urged it to come up with an administrative framework for such an upgrade which will be presented to the National Assembly.
Sir Ohaa, while emphasizing the pivotal role of sports in strengthening the unity of the country, said it helps to relegate to the background certain primordial differences like religion and tribalism.
He also stated that sports was a significant tool for employment generation among the youths as well as a means of ensuring physical fitness and overall wellbeing of the human body.
He assured that that provisions will be made in next year’s budget to give encourage development of sports in the FCT.
The FCT Permanent Secretary however enjoined the FCT Sports Association to also work together with other private partners to get the necessary sponsorship for sporting activities in the FCT to fill the funding gaps.
Earlier in his remarks, Mr Edem Selong, appreciated the various roles that the FCT Administration has been playing to encourage the growth of sports in the FCT, especially the successful hosting of the FCT Sports Festival.
He said the contributions of sports for solidifying national unity as well as breaking political frontiers cannot be overemphasized.
He added that the Sports Associations will continue to do all it can to keep the flag of sports flying in the FCT and ensure that the FCT remains a pace setter in sports development.
